Vaillant helps tsunami victims with €23,000 donation
Remscheid, March 2, 2005
At Remscheid Town Hall today, Lady Mayor Beate Wilding and department head Burkhard Mast-Weisz received from Bernd Mittelbach, Chairman of the Works Council of heating technology manufacturer Vaillant, cheques for a total of more than €23,000 for the victims of the tsunami disaster in South Asia. Of the total, €5,000 came from the Works Council's funds, which are financed by employee contributions. The company doubled this sum to €10,000, an extra €3,000 came from an additional fundraising drive among employees, and Vaillant's subsidiaries abroad contributed another €5,000.
Vaillant is thus supporting the 'Remscheid Helps' action under the patronage of the Lady Mayor for reconstruction work and aid for the people of Sri Lanka. The initiative is focusing on the island's southern region, where accommodation is being built for people who lost their homes in the flood, the restoration of small businesses and the building of schools. "We decided to support this action by Remscheid, our company's home town, because we have the impression that it is providing sensible aid for a very badly-affected region in an efficient and sustainable way," said Bernd Mittelbach.
Vaillant has also in recent years given extensive support to other aid measures in disaster areas, such as after the major earthquake in Turkey in 1999/2000 and the disastrous floods in Eastern Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic in 2002.
